Togolese media, key partners in the fight against cybercrime

On December 20, 2024, in Lomé, the National Cybersecurity Agency (ANCy) organized a training workshop for journalists on good cybersecurity practices. This event aimed to raise awareness among media professionals about the increased risks of cybercrime at the end of the year, while strengthening their ability to effectively relay prevention messages to citizens.

The holiday season is a prime time for cyberattacks, with well-orchestrated scams targeting the general public. Reported practices include fake donations attributed to public figures, fraudulent videos of children supposedly up for adoption, and fake promotions from major retailers like Champion or Ramco. These schemes encourage victims to click on malicious links and disclose sensitive information, such as ID or bank details, which is then used for fraudulent purposes.

The ANCy reiterated the importance for citizens to remain vigilant against these digital traps and to avoid sharing their personal data online without prior verification.

Media outlets, as key players in the dissemination of information, are also potential targets for cybercriminals. A hacked news website can be used to spread fake news or misinform the public. ANCy emphasized the need for news organizations to strengthen the security of their platforms by adopting practices such as using complex passwords, regularly updating systems, and remaining vigilant against phishing attacks.

During this workshop, the ANCy called on journalists to become active relays of awareness among communities. " Your role is crucial in relaying prevention messages and ensuring that citizens are informed of online threats ," stressed the Agency's Director General, Commander Gbota Gwaliba. Journalists are invited to position themselves as cybersecurity ambassadors, contributing to the dissemination of good practices and the fight against fake news.

This ANCy initiative aims to train Togolese media so that together they can work to protect citizens and their personal data in the face of growing cyber threats.
