World Bank finances social protection in Togo

The World Bank has announced its financial support for Togo's Transformative Social Assistance for Resilience (ASTRE) program. The US$100 million financing agreement was signed by the Minister of Economy and Finance, Sani Yaya, and the Bank's Country Director for Togo, Marie-Chantal Uwanyiligira. This loan, granted by the International Development Association (IDA), will support the national non-contributory social protection program.

The National Non-Contributory Social Protection Program aims to combat extreme poverty and vulnerability by establishing a unique, robust, and reliable identification system and a social registry of individuals and households to facilitate targeted cash transfers. This program will reach more than 2 million Togolese by 2029, with particular attention to the gender dimension.

In addition to the implementation of the single identification system and the social registry for individuals and households, support measures will be implemented to promote financial and social inclusion, as well as access to basic social services. The Minister of Grassroots Development, Myriam Dossou-d'Almeida, emphasized that these measures will promote the financial and social inclusion of vulnerable populations.

This World Bank funding will support Togo's national non-contributory social protection program and positively impact more than 2 million Togolese by 2029.
