Togo participates in the 2nd G25 Summit for the transformation of the coffee sector in Africa
The 2nd Summit of the Group of Twenty-Five African Coffee Producing Countries (G25) was held from August 7 to 10 in Uganda, with the active participation of Togo, represented by the Minister of Trade, Industry and Local Consumption, Kodjo Adedze. The main objective of this meeting was to discuss the transformation of the coffee sector on the continent, with a focus on value addition.
Although Africa accounts for approximately 12% of global coffee production, its economic contribution remains modest, at only $2.5 billion in 2021, compared to the estimated global trade value of coffee of $466 billion. In response, Kodjo Adedze stressed the need to revitalize the coffee sector in Africa by promoting local processing, domestic consumption, and seizing the opportunities offered by the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
At the end of the summit, a final declaration was signed by the heads of state and government present or represented. This declaration commits countries to support research on the added value of coffee, to invest more in the development of coffee and its products, and to promote domestic consumption. The G25 also committed to strengthening vocational training in the coffee sector for youth and women, with a view to creating jobs, and to facilitating access to financing for coffee development projects.
It is worth noting that in Togo, the last coffee production campaign recorded a significant increase of 55%.
