World Environment Day: Togolese women mobilize against plastic pollution

Three women's civil society organizations in Togo have come together to organize an awareness campaign on plastic pollution in the Kpélé1 commune, specifically in Kpélé Dafon, on the occasion of World Environment Day. The Women's Initiative for Development (IFD), the Mains du Développement Association (AMD), and the Association Jeunes Engagés en Action pour le Développement (JEAD) joined forces on June 8 to raise awareness about the harmful effects of plastic pollution on health, the economy, and the environment.

Brief overview of the interventions

The celebration began with an environmental caravan, followed by an awareness-raising session. Ms. Kolani Totine of the NGO IFD explained to the people of Kpélé Dafon the reasons that led the United Nations to dedicate a day to the environment, the issue of global warming, while giving concrete examples directly related to this population.

For her part, Ms. SOMABE Adjovi, head of JEAD, addressed the issue of plastic pollution by shedding light on the harmful effects of plastic bags on health, the economy, and the environment. She also drew attention to endangered plants and the importance of reforesting these plants, which are becoming rare.

To conclude this awareness-raising stage, the AMD coordinator, Ms. NABROULABA Tém, gave possible solutions to combat plastic pollution, such as initiatives to create green businesses for those who wish to commit to fighting plastic pollution.

A discussion then allowed participants to learn about the laws in force in Togo regarding plastics. The celebration concluded with the planting of 100 young plants. The day was a success for the organizations involved and for the people of Kpélé Dafon. The call is therefore launched to potential partners who would like to support these organizations in their commitment to the environment.
