Togo and Benin: towards concerted management of water resources

Togo and Benin are finalizing the outlines of a joint project aimed at ensuring concerted and sustainable management of their shared water resources. A European Union (EU) delegation discussed this issue on Tuesday with officials from the National Agency for Civil Protection (ANPC) in Lomé.

The mission, led by the Executive Director of the Volta Basin Authority, is part of preparations for a transboundary water management project, focusing on the Mono Basin. The project, worth 9.8 billion CFA francs (15 million euros), will be implemented jointly by Togo and Benin, with support from the European Union.

The initiative aims to strengthen cooperation between the two countries for better governance of water resources, while integrating issues related to risk prevention, ecosystem protection and adaptation to climate change.

It should be noted that a first meeting had already been held at the beginning of the week in the same spirit between the EU delegation and the Minister responsible for water and sanitation.

As a reminder, the Mono Basin is a river area shared between Togo and Benin, extending over approximately 24,300 km², 88% of which is located on Togolese territory. It constitutes a strategic resource for agriculture, fishing, water supply and energy production.
