Togolese government commits to quickly resolving energy crisis
Mila Aziable, Minister Delegate to the President of the Togolese Republic, responsible for Energy and Mines, held a press conference to explain to the Togolese the current energy situation and the government's efforts to resolve the power outage crisis.
The minister highlighted several major factors behind this energy crisis. First, maintenance work on power plants in Ghana has reduced electricity imports. Second, work on natural gas production facilities in Nigeria has reduced the volume of gas exported to neighboring countries, including Togo. Furthermore, ongoing infrastructure work in Nigeria, as well as the country's decision to temporarily prioritize its domestic needs, have exacerbated the situation.
Mila Aziable also formally denied rumors that the debt of the Togolese Electricity Company (CEET) was the cause of this crisis. “All these factors have intensified the sector's difficulties and disrupted the balance that we had managed to restore in April,” she explained.
Despite these challenges, the government, led by the Head of State, remains firmly committed to ensuring universal access to reliable, high-quality, and sufficient electricity for all Togolese by 2030. The government is also working to reduce the country's energy dependence.
“The current situation we are experiencing reinforces the vision of the President of the Republic and pushes us to accelerate the implementation of the plan to strengthen our energy sovereignty,” the minister declared. She recalled the efforts made since the last energy crisis in 2006, notably the increase in national electricity production from 10% to 60%, thanks to the construction and commissioning of several infrastructures.
To return to normal and optimize consumption, numerous actions are currently being undertaken. "We are doing everything we can to resolve this crisis quickly and sustainably," assured Mila Aziable.
Minister Mila Aziable's press conference clarified the causes of the current energy crisis and reaffirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a rapid and lasting solution. Despite the challenges, the Togolese authorities continue to work tirelessly to improve electricity supply and achieve the goal of universal access by 2030.
