Renewal of municipal councils in Togo: instructions from the Ministry of Territorial Administration

Togolese municipalities are preparing to formalize the complete renewal of their municipal councils following the recent local elections. As part of this transition toward the installation of new elected officials, the Ministry of Territorial Administration published, on Wednesday, July 23, a series of administrative instructions intended to facilitate the transfer of responsibilities.

The first magistrates and all actors involved in the execution of municipal budgets are called upon to strictly respect the approved budget forecasts . The ministry stressed the importance of refraining from any non-essential financial commitment, particularly during the transitional period preceding the installation of the new councils.

Elected officials are also urged to avoid engaging the community beyond available resources , and to focus only on projects relating to day-to-day business management. This aims to ensure sound and responsible financial management in a context of change.

The ministry stressed the need for elected officials to regularize all pending situations . This approach aims to provide a true picture of the community's real situation, in order to prepare for a smooth transition to the new municipal councils.

As a reminder, the provisional results of the local elections placed the Union for the Republic (UNIR) in the lead, with around 75% of the seats won .
