Obstacles to the development of artists in Togo
The Togolese arts industry is rich in talent and creativity. However, despite this abundance of potential, many artists face obstacles that hinder their growth and success. Among these obstacles, a lack of communication about activities, pride, a lack of collaboration, and division into clans stand out as the main problems affecting the artistic community in Togo. This article, written by sociologist, visual artist, and journalist Djamiou ABOUDOU, explores these challenges and proposes possible solutions for positive development.
Lack of communication about activities
One of the most glaring problems is the lack of communication about artistic activities. Many events, exhibitions, and performances go unnoticed due to a lack of effective promotion. Artists and organizers struggle to reach a wider audience, thus limiting the visibility and impact of their works. A particular aspect of this problem is the downplaying of the role and impact of the press by some artists. Indeed, many creators rarely use the media to promote their projects, and when they do, they often underpay the media. This approach overlooks the crucial importance of the press in disseminating information and creating buzz around artistic events.
Pride and Individualism
Pride and individualism are another major obstacle. Many artists prefer to work alone, fearing that collaboration will dilute their artistic identity or benefit others more than themselves. This mindset not only limits opportunities for collective growth but also creates an unhealthy competitive environment where mutual support is rare. Pride also prevents some artists from accepting constructive criticism, which is essential to their progress.
Lack of collaboration
Lack of collaboration is intrinsically linked to hubris. Artists who refuse to collaborate miss the opportunity to benefit from the skills and ideas of other creators. Artistic collaborations can lead to innovative projects and open doors to new markets and audiences. Refusing to collaborate keeps artists in small circles and limits the impact of their creations.
Division into clans
Finally, the division into clans within the Togolese artistic community constitutes a major obstacle. These divisions are often based on personal affinities, regional affiliations, or differences in artistic styles. They lead to a fragmentation of the artistic scene, making it difficult to create a strong collective dynamic. Opportunities for networking, mutual support, and resource sharing are thus greatly reduced.
Towards a positive evolution
To overcome these obstacles, it is crucial for Togolese artists to adopt a more collaborative and open approach. Training in communication and promotion techniques, encouraging mutual aid and collective work, and fostering unity beyond clans are all avenues to explore. Artists must also recognize the importance of the press in promoting their work and invest appropriately in media relations.
Cultural institutions and public stakeholders can play a key role in facilitating these changes through support and awareness-raising programs. Together, by breaking down barriers of pride and division, and improving communication and collaboration, Togolese artists can truly unleash their potential and promote their art beyond national borders.
