Plateaux: new directions for the environment

Togo recently announced the establishment of two new environmental directorates in the Plateaux region. This decision, made public on Monday, October 20, by an order issued by the Minister of Environment, Dodzi Komla Kokoroko, aims to improve the management and protection of natural resources in this region.

  • Eastern Plateaux Directorate: Headquarters in Atakpamé, it brings together the environmental services of the prefectures of East-Mono, Anié, Amou, Ogou, Moyen-Mono and Haho.
  • Western Plateaux Directorate: Based in Kpalimé, it includes the services of the prefectures of Wawa, Danyi, Kloto, Kpélé and Agou.

This reorganization is part of a process of decentralization and deconcentration of public services, initiated several years ago. Its main objective is to bring the administration closer to local populations and to strengthen the coordination of environmental actions in this region, the largest in the country.

The new directions must allow:

  • Better Business Planning: Ensuring more efficient management of environmental projects.
  • Efficient Management of Natural Resources: Optimizing the use of available resources to preserve the environment.
  • Local Monitoring: Facilitate the monitoring of local initiatives in environmental protection.

The Plateaux region, covering over 16,000 km², is rich in dense forests, agricultural areas, and mountainous terrain. However, it faces significant challenges, including deforestation, natural resource management, and the effects of climate change.
