Lomé hosts regional meeting on biodiversity

Since Wednesday, May 22, the Togolese capital, Lomé, has hosted a major regional meeting dedicated to the development of an integrated biodiversity database. This initiative, launched by the Observatory for Biodiversity and Protected Areas in West Africa (OBAPAO), brings together experts from 16 countries in the region for an intensive exchange on the survey work conducted over the past four years.

During these three days of discussions, participants will examine in detail the results of the Observatory's surveys and work. The main objective of this meeting is to finalize the creation of an integrated database, an essential tool for improving the long-term conservation and sustainable management of natural resources in African, Caribbean, and Pacific (ACP) countries.

This database, in addition to providing valuable information on biodiversity and protected areas in West Africa, will enable more effective management of natural resources. It is designed to facilitate access to crucial information for decision-makers, researchers, and conservation managers.

The process of developing this database is financially supported by the European Union, through the 11th European Development Fund (EDF). The project is being implemented by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the Joint Research Centre (JRC).

Furthermore, Togo recently updated its National Biodiversity Strategy and Plan (NBSAP) to comply with new international standards. This update is part of a proactive approach aimed at strengthening biodiversity conservation and promoting sustainable ecosystem management.

The Lomé meeting marks a significant milestone in regional efforts to protect and effectively manage biodiversity. The experts present are committed to working closely together to ensure the success of this crucial project, the benefits of which will reverberate throughout the region.
