Emergency measures deployed against floods in Lomé
The Togolese capital, Lomé, and its surrounding areas experienced exceptional rainfall on Wednesday, May 22, causing flooding and placing several localities in critical conditions. The National Agency for Civil Protection (ANPC) assessed the extent of the damage and quickly implemented measures to manage this emergency situation.
The torrential rains particularly impacted around ten basins as well as the municipalities of Golfe 2, 5 and 7, and Agoè-Nyivé 4 and 6. These localities found themselves submerged by water, requiring rapid and coordinated interventions to limit the damage and ensure the safety of residents.
On the ground, specialized teams were deployed to implement initial crisis management measures. These measures prioritized the activation of the water pumping system to quickly evacuate the accumulated water. At the same time, the patrol of alert teams was intensified to closely monitor the evolving situation and intervene if necessary.
Managing this crisis required the mobilization of various stakeholders. The Sanitation Directorate and the National Agency for Public Sanitation were actively involved in coordinating efforts and implementing the necessary measures. In collaboration with the town halls of the affected areas, these agencies are working tirelessly to ensure that all necessary measures are taken to protect populations and minimize material damage.
As field teams continue their efforts, monitoring the situation remains a priority. A thorough assessment is planned to better understand the extent of the rainfall and its consequences, and to adjust response strategies accordingly.
The situation in Lomé and its surrounding areas remains critical, but the rapid mobilization of authorities and response teams demonstrates their commitment to protecting populations and restoring normalcy in the affected areas. Vigilance remains essential, and the authorities call for the cooperation of all citizens to overcome this ordeal.
