Sexual and reproductive health in the face of cultural and social barriers
Despite cultural and social barriers, the Togolese Association for Family Welfare (ATBEF) continues to raise awareness among the population of Davié (located 45 minutes north of Lomé) about the importance of family planning and birth control. In this locality, decisions regarding women's reproductive health are often made by men, which limits women's autonomy in choosing their contraceptive method.
Ms. Esteve Mouhibatou, Regional Coordinator of ATBEF, emphasizes that awareness-raising efforts are continuing among community leaders, religious leaders, and other influential figures in the community. The goal is to disseminate information on the benefits of birth spacing, such as relief for parents, better care and education for children, and the health and well-being of the family as a whole.
The coordinator also highlights the fight against early marriage of young girls. A law now protects young Togolese girls, particularly those still in school, against this type of marriage. When a case of early marriage is reported, ATBEF strives to intervene by talking to parents to raise awareness about the harmful consequences of this practice. In the event of persistent disagreement, the association does not hesitate to take legal action to protect the girls' rights and allow them to continue their studies.
ATBEF remains committed to continuing its efforts in the Davié region to encourage family planning and protect the rights of young girls. Collaboration with local stakeholders and ongoing awareness-raising are essential to changing attitudes and promoting family well-being in this community.
