Regional meeting on social and financial education for young people in Lomé

The Togolese capital has been hosting a major regional meeting on social and financial education for children and young adults since May 13. Initiated by the Ministry of Financial Inclusion in partnership with the international organization Aflatoun and the Ministry of Education, this conference brings together key stakeholders in youth empowerment through social and financial education (SFE). This year's theme, "Let's Grow the Movement for Social and Financial Education for Children," reflects the shared commitment to strengthening these vital skills in the French-speaking African region.

Over the course of five days, participants will exchange views and develop innovative solutions to promote ESF. Particular emphasis will be placed on successful initiatives, particularly those in Togo, in integrating ESF into educational programs.

At the opening of the proceedings, Mazamesso Assih, Minister responsible for financial inclusion, highlighted the Togolese government's efforts in recent years. Among the flagship initiatives, the National Fund for Inclusive Finance (FNFI) stands out, with 109 billion in loans granted over ten years. The minister also discussed the national financial inclusion strategy 2021-2025, aimed at expanding access to financial services for the entire population.

"This major event is a continuation of the partnerships established by our country during the African Microfinance Week (AMW)," said Ms. Assih, emphasizing the importance of collaborations to advance in this area.

Lama Yazbeck, Deputy CEO of Aflatoun, also spoke to highlight the value of the meeting. “The Aflatoun Regional Meeting provides us with a valuable opportunity to come together, share ideas, and chart a course for collective action to advance education and youth empowerment,” she said.

Aflatoun, a non-governmental organization, is dedicated to educating children about their rights and responsibilities, as well as financial resource management through ESF. Its role is crucial in developing the skills needed for responsible financial management and social empowerment of young people.

This regional meeting promises to be a catalyst for new initiatives and collaborations, strengthening the commitment of all stakeholders involved in social and financial education for children and young adults. The expected results are expected to inspire other regions and nations to adopt similar programs, thus contributing to greater financial inclusion and youth empowerment in French-speaking Africa.
