Lomé hosts regional conference on marine pollution
Since Monday, November 25, the Togolese capital has been hosting the 10th regional conference of the Global Initiative for West, Central, and Southern Africa (GI WACAF). Organized by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), this meeting brings together representatives from 22 countries to discuss strategies for combating oil spills in the region.
Scheduled to last four days, ending November 28, the conference aims to assess progress made since the last edition and promote the sharing of experiences in terms of best practices. The conference will also help define strategic priorities and strengthen regional cooperation in the face of marine pollution risks.
For Togo, the event represents a major opportunity. Deeply committed to preserving the marine environment, the country relies on a special coastguard unit. This unit plays a key role in preventing pollution at sea and combating trafficking in unmonitored areas.
Through this conference, Lomé reaffirms its desire to actively contribute to the protection of marine ecosystems and the implementation of collective actions to limit the impacts of hydrocarbons on the environment.
