Launch of the national campaign for the distribution of school kits in Togo
On September 9, the Minister, Secretary General of the Presidency of the Council and Governor of Togo at the World Bank, Sandra Ablamba Johnson, launched the national campaign to distribute school kits for girls in primary, middle, and high schools. The event took place in Djémégni, in the Haho prefecture, in the Plateaux region.
This initiative aims to provide complete school kits to more than 100,000 students from 800 localities in 64 cantons across the country. Each kit includes essential supplies for academic success, at a total cost of approximately 603 million CFA francs. This program is part of the Sahel Women's Empowerment and Demographic Dividend Project (SWEDD+), funded by the World Bank in partnership with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
Sandra Johnson pointed out that for the 2025-2026 school year, the initial number of beneficiaries was 50,615 students, but thanks to the political will of the President of the Council, this figure has almost doubled, reaching 100,000 beneficiaries. This increase demonstrates the authorities' commitment to improving access to education, particularly for girls.
Professor Komla Dodzi Kokoroko, Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, also highlighted the importance of this campaign. “Investing in girls’ education is investing in a fairer, more prosperous, and more resilient future for all humanity,” he said, recalling the progress made by Togo in this area.
The World Bank, represented by Marie-Chantal Uwanyiligira, Regional Director for Benin, Côte d'Ivoire, Guinea, and Togo, and UNFPA Resident Representative Elise Kankam, reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Togo in its efforts to improve education. They pledged to intensify their collaboration to ensure equitable access to education, particularly for girls.
