Improving cassava production in Togo
In Togo, cassava production is poised for a significant improvement thanks to a recent initiative. Last month, 75 members of the Fresh Cassava Innovation Platform (PIMF), including 25 women, participated in a training course on good cultivation practices for this tuber in Atakpamé.
This training, supported by the West Africa Food System Resilience Program (FSRP), was designed to strengthen the skills of cassava producers. Participants were trained on the entire technical process, from variety selection to pest management.
The long-term objective of this initiative is to sustainably improve cassava yields and disseminate these new agricultural practices to a greater number of cooperatives. This approach is fully in line with the Togolese government's commitment to supporting stakeholders in the tuber sector towards more efficient and resilient production.
To support this momentum, Togo has implemented an Investment Action Plan for the Root and Tuber Plants (PRT) sector, which will run from 2024 to 2028. In 2024, tuber production reached a volume of 2,515,000 tonnes, up from 2,406,614 tonnes in 2023.
