Combating violent extremism and illicit trade in Togo

Lomé, December 20, 2024 – A capitalization workshop was held on December 20 and 21 in the Togolese capital, bringing together government authorities, diplomatic representatives, and civil society actors to discuss the results of the project to prevent violent extremism led by the YOUTH AWAKE organization. This project, which produced satisfactory results, took place thanks to the financial support of the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs through the Institut für Auslandsbeziehungenen (IFA).

In response to the growing threat of terrorism, which particularly affects the Savanes region in northern Togo, the project aimed to identify the root causes of violent extremism and develop strategies to control illicit trade, the main source of funding for terrorist groups.

In her speech, the representative of the German Embassy emphasized her country's commitment to supporting Togo in this fight, particularly through development programs and the strengthening of border security. She notably recalled the recent inauguration of a border post in Taman by the Minister of Security and Civil Protection.

The Executive Director of YOUTH AWAKE presented the project's main achievements, including the development of a local action plan and the training of focal points on the issue of illicit trade. " Our approach aims not only to raise awareness about the dangers of illicit trade, but also to offer viable economic alternatives for young people ," he said.

The Director of Cabinet of the Ministry of Territorial Administration, representing the Minister, welcomed this initiative, which is part of the government's strategy to combat violent extremism. He recalled the efforts made since 2018, including military operations in the Savanes region and the awareness-raising work of the interministerial committee, which have made it possible to " push terrorist groups beyond borders and strengthen the resilience of populations ."

The workshop resulted in concrete recommendations, including the creation of local peace cells, the establishment of community mediators, and the development of income-generating activities for young people in border areas. These actions will be implemented in collaboration with local authorities and civil society organizations, with financial support from international partners.

This initiative demonstrates the inclusive approach adopted by Togo in its fight against violent extremism, combining security response and socio-economic development of vulnerable areas.
