Judicial police dismantle a vast network of phone thieves in Lomé

The Central Directorate of the Judicial Police conducted an operation to dismantle criminal networks called "EPERVIER 2" from June 24 to July 7, 2023, with the aim of combating insecurity in Lomé, particularly the theft of phones and motorcycles. The operation led to the arrest of 29 thieves and fences in Katanga, Zorro-Bar, Adakpamé and Bè. The thieves specialize in the theft of mobile phones and operate mainly on the stretch from the Hôtel de la Paix crossroads to the Bè lagoon, as well as in public places with high population density such as music concerts.

Thieves use three different methods of operation: the first involves stealing phones and any valuables from cars stopped at traffic lights. The second method involves approaching a victim and ordering them, at gunpoint, to hand over their bag or cell phone. The third method involves provoking or taking advantage of crowds at beach concerts and other crowded places to steal cell phones.

The DCPJ seized several tramadol tablets and cannabis joints as well as 40 mobile phones, 1 DELL laptop, 2 Power Banks, 1 radio, 9 mobile phone chargers, 1 wallet containing 68,000 FCFA, 16 SIM cards not incorporated in the phones.

The investigations led to the discovery of several victims, including the owner of the computer, who claims that his device was stolen in Tsévié in February 2023. The offenders will be brought before the Public Prosecutor of Lomé to answer for their actions. The DCPJ invites anyone whose phone was stolen in the circumstances of time and place mentioned above to contact its services, equipped with evidence for verification. The National Police urges the population to be vigilant and to collaborate with the security forces.
