Disaster Prevention in Togo: A Call to Action
The international community observed World Disaster Reduction Day on Monday, October 13, 2025. Established in 1989, this day aims to raise awareness of the need to reduce the devastating effects of disasters and to promote prevention actions.
In a message for the occasion, the Minister of Security, Calixte Batossie Madjoulba, highlighted the main actions undertaken by the government to anticipate and reduce these risks. These include:
- Implementation of the Early Warning System
- Development of national mapping of risk areas
- Strengthening the network of hydrometeorological equipment
- Conducting information and awareness campaigns on disaster prevention
"The International Day for Disaster Reduction reminds us that every disaster can be anticipated. Acting early reduces the human, economic, and social cost of crises. The Togolese government has made proactive risk management a national priority. Everyone, institutions and citizens, must contribute to building a more resilient Togo," the official urged.
As a reminder, since 2017, Togo has had a National Civil Protection Agency (ANPC), responsible for coordinating actions to prevent, prepare for and respond to disasters, in order to protect populations and reduce the risks associated with emergency situations.
