Access to water: the government receives 60 billion FCFA in funding for Greater Lomé

Togo is receiving new support as part of its policy to improve access to water and sanitation. On Thursday, April 13, the Minister of Economy and Finance, Sani Yaya, signed a financing agreement on behalf of the government in Washington with World Bank Director of Operations Coralie Gevers. The signing ceremony took place on the sidelines of the Spring Meeting of the Bretton Woods institutions, in which Togo is participating.

Concretely, the country benefits from an envelope of $100 million (approximately 60 billion FCFA), in order to make drinking water available in the Greater Lomé region, and improve sanitation services.

The funding, part of the Togo Urban Water Security (TUWS) project, aims to support the operational performance of service providers and water resource management, improve wastewater management, promote public sanitation, and address the problem of non-revenue water.

“This new operation reflects the World Bank's commitment to helping Togo overcome its water and sanitation challenges. It will significantly contribute to achieving the objectives of the government's roadmap, which aims to achieve an 80% drinking water supply rate by 2025 in Lomé, the capital,” explained Sani Yaya.

For the government, this is above all one of the first materializations of the various promises collected last December in Lomé, during the round table for mobilizing resources for the implementation of the strategy for universal access to water.

As a reminder, more than 230 million euros in firm financing promises, or approximately 157 billion FCFA, had been collected.
