Togo: Media on the front line for responsible reporting in times of crisis

As part of the project "Strengthening the inclusion and resilience of young people and women to combat violent extremism and terrorism, while promoting social harmony and sustainable cohesion" , a training workshop organized by YOUTH AWAKE and intended for radio and television presenters and journalists was officially launched this Monday, October 6, 2025 in Lomé. Scheduled for two days, this event aims to strengthen the skills of media professionals in ethics and information management in crisis situations.

The opening of the workshop was marked by a speech by Mr. Yao Abarim, Chief of Staff to the President of the High Authority for Audiovisual and Communication (HAAC). He emphasized the crucial importance of verified and responsible information, especially in contexts where citizens are looking for reliable sources. "Crises, whatever their nature, are moments when the media become key players, not only to inform objectively, but also to prevent tensions and strengthen social cohesion ," he said.

Participants Overview

Mr. Abarim recalled that the HAAC had already initiated similar seminars in September 2022 in Lomé, Atakpamé and Dapaong, resulting in the signing of a media charter for the fight against terrorism and violent extremism. "Informing in sensitive times is not just about reporting facts, but also measuring the impact of our words, our images and our editorial choices on society ," he added, encouraging participants to take ownership of the tools and best practices shared during this workshop.

TAGBA Tchilalo, a TVT presenter, expressed her enthusiasm: "This workshop is a valuable opportunity for us journalists. It allows us to equip ourselves to provide reliable and relevant information to the public. In times of crisis, it is essential to provide content that enlightens and reassures."

For his part, DAMBRE SIBIDI, President of the Board of Directors of Youth Awake, stressed the urgency of combating disinformation: "Togo has been going through a period of crisis for several years. It is imperative to provide accurate and well-disseminated information to prevent false information from exacerbating conflicts." This project, supported by the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs through the Zivik program, is part of an approach to prevention and peace promotion.

The workshop brings together public and private media professionals from all regions of Togo. The goal is to strengthen their skills for responsible reporting, in accordance with the values of truth, ethics, and national cohesion. The exchanges and sharing of experiences should enable participants to adopt increasingly professional journalistic practices, in the service of collective resilience and lasting peace.

The workshop will continue tomorrow, Tuesday, October 7, 2025, with practical sessions and case studies to strengthen the impact of media in crisis management.
