Togo strengthens its food resilience with new processing units
As part of the Program for Strengthening Resilience to Food and Nutrition Insecurity in the Sahel (P2-P2RS), Togo is preparing to establish ten processing units. The Ministry of Agriculture, Village Water Resources, and Rural Development recently launched a call for expressions of interest to recruit a firm to conduct a study on the installation of these facilities.
This project, financed by the African Development Bank's (AfDB) Transition Support Facility (TSF), is part of the national strategy for the development of agricultural products. The future processing units will be dedicated to several activities, including:
- The transformation of paddy rice into white rice
- Packaging and labeling of vegetables
- Refrigeration of fruits and vegetables
- Composting
The expected study will include several essential analyses, such as:
- Value chain analysis
- Technical and financial feasibility
- The choice of implantation sites
- The management model
- Public-private partnership mechanisms to attract private investors
The main objective of this project is to ensure the economic and social viability of the units, while boosting the income of local producers. In addition, it aims to strengthen the country's food security and create regional agro-industrial hubs through better integration between production, processing, and marketing.
The Sahel Food and Nutrition Insecurity Resilience Building Program is supported by $6 million (approximately 3.3 billion CFA francs) in financing from the AfDB. This project represents a crucial step in improving food security in Togo and supporting rural development.
