Togo: seminars on protection and sustainable development

Togolese elected officials are meeting to strengthen their skills in population protection and sustainable development. Two seminars were launched on Wednesday, October 8, at the headquarters of the National Assembly, marking an important step in the parliamentarians' commitment to crucial issues.

The first seminar, supported by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), addresses the role of parliamentarians in implementing international humanitarian law at the national level. This training aims to help MPs understand humanitarian principles, enabling them to integrate them into their legislative work. The goal is to ensure the protection of civilians and essential objects in times of conflict.

The second seminar, supported by the French Development Agency (AFD), focuses on raising awareness among parliamentarians about climate risks and green budgeting. This initiative encourages political advocacy for the integration of adaptation and climate change mitigation into legislation and government planning.

Myriam Dossou d'Almeida, 6th Vice-President of the National Assembly, highlighted the importance of these two themes. She stated: " Conflicts exacerbate the vulnerability of populations to climate disasters, while ecological disasters amplify tensions and forced migrations. In other words, these two themes embody two inseparable dimensions of peace: peace between people and peace between humanity and nature. "

The seminars will continue until Friday, October 10, with the hope of strengthening the capacities of parliamentarians to face contemporary challenges related to security and the environment.
