Togo: Launch of a new land restoration project

Togo, facing land degradation, particularly in its northern region, is stepping up its efforts to restore its ecosystems. At a ceremony held in Sokodé, the Ministry of Environment and Forest Resources launched the foundations for a new project dedicated to the Central Region. This initiative, supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), aims to strengthen the resilience of natural ecosystems, agroecosystems, and communities in the face of climate change.

The Minister of the Environment stressed the urgency of action, recalling that 23,490 hectares of land are degraded each year in Togo . He stressed the importance of quality preparatory work to enrich the project, which will be submitted to the Global Environment Facility (GEF) for financing.

The project is structured around several specific actions designed to promote the adoption of landscape and ecosystem restoration practices. The objective is to optimize ecosystem resilience, particularly in a region that relies heavily on its natural resources.

At the same time, Togo continues to implement other initiatives, such as the Forests4Future , the second phase of which is currently being implemented. The country also launched a ten-year reforestation policy in 2021, aiming to restore more than one million hectares of degraded landscapes by 2030.
