Togo strengthens awareness of childhood lead poisoning
The Togolese government is stepping up its efforts to raise public awareness about the dangers of childhood lead poisoning, a form of lead poisoning that particularly affects children. A meeting began on September 2 in Lomé, bringing together stakeholders from several ministries to develop effective communication tools and strategies.
Until September 5, participants are working on a communications toolkit to raise awareness and build the capacity of stakeholders involved in childhood lead poisoning prevention. This initiative, supported by UNICEF, aims to reduce the risks of lead exposure and protect the health of children in Togo.
Environment Director Yaou Mery emphasized the importance of this initiative: " We are counting on everyone's expertise and commitment to make this initiative a success, and thus protect the health of our children while preserving our environment ."
Childhood lead poisoning is caused by exposure to lead, which can occur through sources such as lead paint, waste electrical and electronic equipment, or certain mining activities. This poisoning can have serious consequences on children's brain development, leading to long-lasting disorders.
