Togo commits to sustainable fishing by preparing to ratify the WTO convention on subsidies

On Wednesday, January 10, 2024, Togo's Minister of Maritime Economy, Fisheries, and Coastal Protection, Edem Tengue, presented a statement to the Council of Ministers announcing preparations for ratification of the World Trade Organization (WTO) Convention on Fisheries Subsidies. This initiative marks Togo's significant commitment to ocean sustainability and the preservation of marine resources.

The Convention, adopted on June 17, 2022, represents a major step forward in the fight against harmful fishing practices by prohibiting certain forms of subsidies. Its main objective is to establish new rules to protect fish stocks, thereby contributing to the preservation of marine ecosystems.

Togo, aware of the challenges associated with overfishing and the degradation of marine resources, was invited to ratify this international agreement. The Head of State expressly instructed the government to take all necessary measures to make this ratification a reality, thus underscoring the importance attached to the sustainable management of marine resources in the country.

In recent years, Togo has strengthened its maritime legal framework, adopting several texts related to the implementation of fisheries and aquaculture policies. These actions demonstrate the country's ongoing commitment to preserving its marine heritage and promoting responsible fishing.

Togo's ratification of the WTO Fisheries Subsidies Convention will be an important step towards achieving sustainable development goals related to marine life, contributing to building a future where the ecological balance of the oceans is preserved for future generations.
