Togo: a new conservation plan validated for the Koutammakou site

The Koutammakou site, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004, will benefit from a new conservation plan covering the period 2025-2027. Validated on December 4 in Nadoba, in the Kéran 3 commune, this plan aims to strengthen the management and preservation of this cultural and natural jewel of northern Togo.

Led by the National Commission for Cultural Heritage (CNPC), this initiative is part of the project "Updating the management and conservation plan for the Koutammakou site, the land of the Batammariba." The new tool draws lessons from the shortcomings identified in the previous plan (2022-2024) and proposes concrete solutions to the challenges identified.

The updated plan's priorities include the conservation of the Tatas Somba, the famous earthen turret houses, and the protection of local biodiversity. It also emphasizes participatory governance by involving local communities and stakeholders in site management.

Renowned for its exceptional landscape and unique architectural structures, the Koutammakou site is a symbol of the Batammariba's cultural identity. This new conservation plan aims to ensure the sustainability of this heritage while strengthening its attractiveness and promotion.
