Togo: 2025 reforestation campaign launched, aiming for one billion trees by 2030
National Tree Day marked the official launch of the 2025 reforestation campaign in Togo this Sunday. From the capital, Lomé, the Minister of Environment and Forest Resources, Katari Foli-Bazi, set the tone for a new year of green mobilization.
This highly symbolic launch saw the planting of two million trees across the country. But beyond this one-off act, the authorities insist: reforestation is becoming an ongoing mission .
"This is no longer a one-day action, but an ongoing mobilization," the minister insisted during the official ceremony, surrounded by members of the government, officials, and civil society actors.
One billion trees by 2030
This campaign is part of a long-term vision , aligned with national ambitions for forest restoration. The stated objective: to plant one billion trees by 2030 and increase the country's forest cover to 26% by the same year.
The challenge is significant, but it is considered crucial in a context of climate change, biodiversity loss and land degradation. The government is therefore calling for the commitment of all citizens , from local authorities to private actors, to make reforestation an ecological reflex and a regular civic act .
A national dynamic in progress
Since the establishment of Arbor Day in 1977 by President Gnassingbé Eyadéma, June 1st has become a national landmark for environmental awareness and action. The 2025 edition marks a turning point: that of reforestation that is now permanent , spread over twelve months and no longer concentrated on a single day.
This new approach aims to strengthen the impact of field actions by monitoring seedlings and consolidating achievements. In addition to planting campaigns, training, awareness-raising, and monitoring initiatives for reforested areas are planned.
