Temporary suspension of mining prospecting permits in Togo
In Togo, the issuance of prospecting permits and exploration permits for all mineral substances has been temporarily suspended throughout the country. This announcement was made by the Ministry of Mines in a recently published decree. This measure is part of the ongoing review of the Mining Code, which aims to adopt a new text better adapted to current issues and seeks to better regulate the exploitation of natural resources.
According to the ministry, “ this is a strategic pause, the time to provide our country with a more appropriate, more rigorous legal framework geared towards sustainability, transparency and inclusion .” It is important to note that construction materials and industrial minerals are excluded from this suspensive measure.
As a reminder, the Mining Code currently in force dates from 1996 and was amended in 2003. Deemed obsolete in the face of developments in the sector and international standards, it is being revised to adapt it to contemporary issues.
