Progress of the interceptor sanitation network project in Lomé

Work on the Interceptor Sanitation Network for the Prevention of Flooding in Our Areas (RAINE) project has reached a significant milestone, as noted by the Minister for Sanitation, Mila Aziablé, during a field visit to Hédzranawoé on June 23.

Geotechnical work for the second underground well has begun in Hédzranawoé. These studies aim to analyze the composition and resistance of the soil in order to guarantee the safety of the installation of a 7.5 km , which will be responsible for transporting rainwater to the Zio River.

This project aims to significantly reduce flooding in several neighborhoods of Lomé, including Hédzranawoé, Bè-Adidomé, Tokoin, Attiégou, Togo 2000, as well as the areas around the National Assembly and the airport. In addition to strengthening the capital's resilience to climate hazards, it aims to sustainably improve the living environment of the population.

"When the rains fall, there will be no more flooding in these neighborhoods. The concrete idea is to build an underground micro-tunnel to drain rainwater and redirect it to the Zio," the minister said.

The work is planned to last 33 months .
